Red Bulls Triumph Over NYCFC in First-Ever Playoff Hudson River Derby
Citi Field. Queens, New York.

In a historic playoff edition of the Hudson River Derby, the New York Red Bulls defeated New York City FC 2-0 at Citi Field, securing a place in the Eastern Conference Finals for the first time since 2018. The derby was filled with intensity, passion, and a fierce battle for supremacy in New York.
The Red Bulls came out of the gates with purpose, dominating possession and pressing high. Their efforts paid off early, as Dante Vanzeir opened the scoring with a clinical finish in the 12th minute. The move began with a brilliant interception by Sean Nealis, who found Emil Forsberg in midfield. Forsberg’s through ball split the NYCFC defense, allowing Vanzeir to slot the ball past goalkeeper Matt Freese.

Just before halftime, Felipe Carballo doubled the Red Bulls' lead, pouncing on a defensive mix-up by NYCFC. Carballo’s strike was a testament to the Red Bulls' relentless pressure and tactical awareness. Wiki Carmona was a vital part of this effort, controlling the midfield and linking up play seamlessly. His ability to break through NYCFC’s pressing game allowed the Red Bulls to keep up the attacking momentum.
NYCFC fought valiantly in the second half, with Alonso Martínez coming closest to scoring for the home side, only to be denied by Carlos Coronel’s acrobatic save. Despite their efforts, NYCFC struggled to break down the Red Bulls' disciplined defense, anchored by Nealis, Andrés Reyes, and Carmona, who frequently tracked back to support.

The victory was a monumental moment for the Red Bulls, who avenged previous derby losses and silenced NYCFC's home crowd. Carmona’s outstanding performance in the midfield underscored his growing influence on the team. The win sets up an exciting Eastern Conference Final clash and reinforces the Red Bulls' reputation as one of the league's most resilient teams.
